Joseph’s House strives to create a safe and beautiful place for people experiencing homelessness; a place to be heard; a place that recognizes their dignity; a place that provides hope and practical solutions.  The overarching of JH is to end homelessness in Camden, one person at a time.

Volunteers are an integral part of the team at JH and assist in creating a nurturing environment.  We thank you for your interest in joining us in this work.

In-Person Volunteer Opportunities

Serve A Meal (Breakfast: 5:30am – 6:30am; Dinner: 8pm – 9:30pm)

A great way to get to know the guests of JH is preparing and serving breakfast or dinner.  Individual volunteers and/or groups bring casserole dishes, ready to be heated up.  Bringing food is not necessary, however.  Simply volunteer, meet with our Kitchen Coordinator, and go to work!  For those volunteers who are comfortable doing so, JH encourages meeting our shelter guests, share a cup of coffee and engage in conversation.

Volunteer During the Day (Day Program:  9:00am – 2:00pm)

  • Answering the Phones

  • Engaging with the Guests – greet the guests at the door or sit in the waiting area, and engage in conversation with the guests

  • Accepting Donations – greet the donors at the door, accept their donation, and have them fill out an in-kind donation form

  • Filing / Office Work – as needed

  • Assist the Guests – Computer Room (resume building, employment searches, and computer education)

  • Assist in the kitchenette / kitchen – sorting and organizing the food items

  • Donation Organization – sorting and organizing clothes, toiletries, and other items

  • Volunteer Hours – 2-hour time slot weekdays from 9:00a – 2:00p

Utilize Your Gifts and Talents

Joseph’s House appreciates when volunteers share their gifts and talents by thinking ‘outside the box’ when it comes to volunteer opportunities.

Some examples include:

  • Do you play a musical instrument (i.e. guitar or keyboard)?  You and your group could facilitate a musical sing-along with the guests.

  • Are you an artist?  Groups could facilitate an art project.

  • Do you have computer skills?  Groups could assist guests with the employment process (i.e. developing resumes and cover letters, search for employment, etc.).

  • Do you want to assist with the positive self-image of our guests? Groups could offer manicures, pedicures, and foot massages.

  • Do you love playing games?  Groups could organize a game day / night (board games, trivia games, card games, BINGO).

  • Do you love storytelling? Groups could assist with capturing the stories of our guests.

Off-Site Volunteer Opportunities

You don’t have to visit our shelter to spread the word, share our story, like and follow Joseph’s House of Camden online.  Increasing our online presence makes a significant impact.

Coordinate a donation drive: JH relies on in-kind donations of toiletries, clothing, food, and other much needed supplies.  As a result, we’re always looking for volunteers to assist in coordinating donation drives (i.e. churches, schools, businesses, communities, and neighborhoods).  Contact us to find out what our most recent needs are; and we’ll support you in your efforts to collect donations to meet the needs of our guests.

Organize a fundraiser, happy hour, restaurant promotion, or other event to benefit Joseph’s House: Coordinate with staff of JH to organize an event whose proceeds will support the operating costs of the day and night programs.

Host a ‘Party with a Purpose’: Everyone loves being invited to a house party.  Host a party and encourage your guests to bring an in-kind donation or a monetary gift for Joseph’s House.

Be our voice: Continue to share the mission of Joseph’s House with your family, your friends, your co-workers, and among your neighbors.
